Sydney’s NOT A BOYS NAME has dropped his new single ‘Cut It Off’. The track is accompanied by the official video, shot in Perth and directed by Matt Sav.
‘Cut It Off’ was written and produced by NOT A BOYS NAME, aka Dave Jenkins Jr, with additional recording from Simon Berkelman (Philadelphia Grand Jury) and Chris Collins (Tigertown, Skeggs, Gang Of Youths) on mix duties. A well-known and sort after multi-instrumentalist, Dave recorded all the instruments on his second single with additional lead guitar performed by Kirin J Callinan. Beau Golden on Hammond organ and Rosie Fitzgerald (I Know Leopard) on backing vocals.
NOT A BOYS NAMEexplains the conception of the track, “I was having a tough time with life, love and self-worth. One day I was walking down the street and I started imagining this self-help guru yelling life affirming slogans at me like “rise above!”..”pump it up!”.. “Cut it Off!”.. that sort of thing. I started humming a bassline to my footsteps and the song was born.”
For the video, Dave worked with Matt Sav (director) and Rachael Karotkin of PAVLOVA (producer). The video was filmed in an abandoned mansion in Perth with NOT A BOYS NAME as a charismatic cult leader preaching and watching over his followers as they perform a series of strange and curious rituals.
NOT A BOYS NAME is the indie-rock project from Dave Jenkins Jr. The moniker NOT A BOYS NAME is a reminder for Dave to create without concerning himself with the consequences and acts a way to avoid being pigeonholed – creatively or otherwise. “To me, it is about avoiding definition. I didn’t want my name to define me. Let the songs do that,” says Dave.
