Emerging artist San Joseph today shares the video for his new single ‘Everything In The Room’. As the follow-up to his debut single ‘Blink Twice’, ‘Everything In The Room’ is a post-modern tune that already feels like a well-worn classic. Watch here.
San Joseph says of the video, “Making the video was a really contrasting process to the Blink Twice video. Rather than feeding off the energy of a charismatic cast, I had to connect with the song emotionally in a sterile environment, which was something I hadn’t really done before. In saying that, the set design by the crew was so inspiring that it made the performance feel natural and even cathartic at times.”
Gently delivered yet heaving with emotion, Everything in the Room is San Joseph’s way of illustrating this experience. Lyrically, it transforms the contents of his bedroom into a spectre of his own conscience, as he struggles to move on from someone he knows.
Directed by ROME (Benee, Mallrat) who wanted to create something that stayed true to the undeniable emotion of the song says, “I did not create a strict narrative for the video myself – instead, I used my vision of the song to create a canvas through which Joey could tell his story, and express his emotions physically, via his performance. I made each shot to serve as an emotive and aesthetically accurate vehicle for that message.”
San Joseph further comments, “When Rome presented his idea for the clip, I was really interested in his idea of marrying the “real” and “surreal. The vision for the video allowed me to express an array of emotions in the performance that mirrored the complexity of feelings the song spans. Balancing the claustrophobic nature of the “room” with an expansiveness that went beyond lyrics was really important to me, and I think we achieved that.”
The new single and video adds yet another feather to San Josephs cap, as the Melbourne artist continues to cement his signature alt-pop sound, confirming him as one of Australia’s most exciting new voices of the year.
